That was how business with Mr. Gwak began. He was a builder, and when he found a brick on the side of the tracks, he instantly knew how superior it was, having lived on construction sites his whole life. He was constructing a building so far away it took him three whole days on the train to get there, but he had rushed over anyway, in order to get his hands on the good bricks. Later he would build the first apartment building in the nation, sell the units, and establish the second-largest construction company in the country, but he would die at the relatively young age of fifty-two, without having enjoyed any of his successes. He would be drinking with friends by a river and dive in to prove he was still fit enough to swim across, but his heart would stop. This was the law of recklessness.

He had guts and was hot-tempered, so he got along well with Geumbok. So well, in fact, that they would end up sleeping together, and when Mun found out, Geumbok would make excuses, saying, “If Mr. Gwak hadn’t appeared right then and there, I would have been thrown into a kiln to become kindling. He saved my life. Is it really so bad that I said yes once? It’s just a body that would rot away in death.”

That was, of course, merely an excuse. Later, Geumbok, her appetite irrepressible, would bring into her bed not only her savior but also itinerant laborers, hurting Mun gravely, but in any case she had certainly avoided this crisis thanks to Mr. Gwak.
